Support needed for Durban North blood drive

The blood drive has two goals, to help boost blood stocks and raise awareness on the End Polio Now campaign led by Rotary International.

WITH national blood stocks in decline, the Rotary Club of Durban North is calling on residents to be everyday heroes for their blood drive on Saturday, October 24.

The drive runs from 08:30 until 12:30 at the Durban North Blood Donor Centre on Swapo Road (Broadway).

Hilary Augustus of the club said the day has two goals, to help boost blood stocks and raise awareness on the End Polio Now campaign led by Rotary International.

The day takes on added significance as World Polio Day is also observed annually on October 24.

“As a club we have teamed up with the South Africa National Blood Service (SANBS) to be public health advocates. We want to boost the blood supply stocks while also campaigning for a world free from polio. Together we can make a difference. On the day there will be free blood sugar and blood pressure testing. Donations of R10 will go towards our Polio campaign,” she said.

Anyone donating a pint of blood will also receive a cupcake. Augustus said the event is open to anyone who would like to contribute.

Dennis Ngongoma, Donor Relations Practitioner at SANBS, also encouraged residents to support the drive on the day.

“We commend the Rotary Club for their efforts in helping us bolster our blood stocks. As we approach the festive season it is generally a time when we require blood because of accidents and school breaks so the demand gets higher. So many people in life-threatening situations require blood so we are urging residents to get behind this and come out to support on the day,” he said.
