Several injured in head-on collision on Umhlanga Rocks Drive

The serious head-on collision left six people injured.

SEVERAL people were injured, two critically so, in a head-on collision on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911, the Jaws of Life were used to free one of the drivers of a vehicle involved in the collision.

“Reports indicate that a bakkie and car were involved in the collision. One person, an adult male driver, was trapped in the car and had to be freed using the Jaws of Life,” Herbst explained.

He added that various first responders, including Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services, Durban North SAPS, Marshall Security, Emer-G-Med EMS and Government EMS were also on scene to assist.

Kyle van Reenen, spokesperson for Emer-G Med, said the driver of one of the vehicles and a passenger in the bakkie suffered critical injuries.

“Advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise them before they were transported to a nearby hospital. At least four other men suffered moderate injuries and were treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.
