Bringing on the heat in Durban North

There will be an artisanal sauce competition, chilli-eating competition and lots of different chilli products on offer.

DURBANITES can prepare themselves for a heat sensation as the first Great East Coast Chilli Fest takes place in Durban North at the end of March.

Organisers Nick Papadopoulos and Tanya Cowan, who both share an interest in anything to do with chillies, are excited to be hosting the event at Northwood Crusaders on March 25.

“I’ve always had an interest in chillies, and I love the sauces. After researching and establishing that there are many other chilli lovers like me, Tanya and I decided to create this platform for everyone to connect,” said Papadopoulos who is in the catering business.

He said there were numerous chilli fan pages on social media where people share tips, ideas, products and the like.

“It’s a true passion and interest in the craft. These sauces are crafted using pure ingredients. With the heat comes immense flavour,” he added.

At the event, chilli fans can look forward to a variety of stalls showcasing anything chill-related, food stalls and competitions, etc.

The highlight of the day will be the chilli-eating competition, sponsored by Ultibro Farms, which will start off pretty mild and end with a bang as competitors have to finish off the deadly Carolina reaper.

“Surprisingly, someone wins. Don’t worry, though, we will supply frozen toilet paper,” said Papadopoulos with a laugh.

Another highlight is the artisanal sauce competition where sauce creators are encouraged to bring three samples along with them for judges to taste.

“This competition will be categorised, starting from mild and progressing to the hotter ranges. Whether you sell your sauces or just simply make it at home, we really want to see you enter,” said Cowan who specialises in hospitality and events.

There will be mild food on sale for the children and those who are not a fan of hot food.
“If you make chilli sauces or anything with chilli in it, this event is for you. We’d love to see products with a chilli twist, as well,” she said.
