Durban North Montessori hosts Party for the Planet

OCEAN View Montessori School held a Party for the Planet on Friday to celebrate Earth Day.

On Saturday, millions of people around the globe celebrated the annual day as a way of promoting awareness for the health of our environment.

For principal of the school Lucy Cronje, the day was about learners, staff and parents making a pledge to the planet.

There were also some familiar faces at the event with Enviro Fixers Durban North’s Helen Koch, who judged the best hat of the day, and a special address by young eco-warrior Romario Valentine and author of his own book, Protecting our Planet. Members of Adopt-a-River were also there to educate the youngsters on protecting the environment and our rivers.

“For our school, this was a crucial way to raise awareness on crucial issues affecting our planet. We also asked our parents and learners to make one of six pledges for the planet. They were ‘Say no to plastic’, ‘Recycle your waste’, ‘Encourage nature around your garden’, ‘Grow food’, ‘Reduce energy consumption’ and to ‘Reduce water consumption and pollution’. It really is one way of educating the young children on how they can also play a part in protecting our planet.

“I must also commend everyone on their incredible creations with their hats made of recycled materials. We are so thankful for the time and effort given by our special guests from Adopt-a-River, Enviro Fixers Durban North and Romario. This was, without a doubt, a success,” Cronje said.
