Crusaders 4th Rugby Team tackle kit change with kit donations

While known primarily as a social team, they also give their kits and golfers to underprivileged rugby clubs in the Drakensberg and Winterton areas.

IT is not hard to miss the Crusaders 4th Rugby Team on the rugby field.

The team, who are known as The Crushers, play in the Glen Crew League and are instantly recognisable by their Marvel-themed kits.

This year, they are sporting an Incredible Hulk-themed kit.

While known primarily as a social team, they are also about giving their kits and golfers back to underprivileged rugby clubs in the Drakensberg and Winterton areas.

Eugene Koekemoer, who wears several hats in the team, from manager to coach to organiser, said the team donated their Captain America and Spider-Man kits.

“We’ve always organised our own kits as we have a few businessmen in the team. We managed to get a few sponsors, and we wanted to do our own theme. If you remember a few years ago, all the SA franchise teams had Marvel-themed kits, and we thought we’d follow suit.

“We are big on development, and being able to give back in a meaningful way is why we decided to donate to the clubs. We do this every year, and it is one way of helping underprivileged teams. We’d also like to thank our generous sponsors for making all of this possible,” he said.

Koekemoer said he hoped to uphold and continue this tradition for years to come.

“We’ve all been involved in rugby in some capacity, be it a player or supporter. It’s important we keep these traditions alive and stand as an example to our fellow rugby players,” he said.

The team trains on Mondays and Wednesdays at Crusaders Sports Club on Ranleigh Crescent.

“We are a very social team. We play a bit of touch rugby for 45 minutes and a few drills, and we welcome anyone who is keen. If the bug bites, the door is always open at The Crushers.”
