Disconnection scammer at it again in Durban North

The man asks residents to pay him a sum of money via e-wallet to avoid disconnection.

IF you receive a call from a man claiming that your municipal bill is in arrears and that you will soon be disconnected, it is possibly the ‘disconnection scammer’, who is doing the rounds again in Durban North.

Ward 36 councillor Shontel de Boer told Northglen News that residents had first approached her after receiving these calls in 2021 and it seemed the man was back at it again.

“One resident called me on Friday to say she had received this strange call from a man telling her she was on the disconnection list, and he could help her if she sent him an e-wallet of R1 500,” said de Boer.

The resident knew it was a scam as her account was up-to-date, however, the ward councillor said that residents had panicked in the past when they received this call.

“The municipality will never call you to advise you about being disconnected. They will send you notices and then disconnect. I strongly advise anyone who has received a call from this scammer to report it to SAPS,” she said.
