One arrested for cable theft in Durban North

A second suspect involved in the theft evaded arrest after a foot chase on Ellis Park Drive.

A SUSPECT was arrested on Monday afternoon after they were caught stealing electrical copper cables on Ellis Park Drive.

In recent months, cable thieves have targeted the Durban North suburbs’ crippling electricity distribution and causing hour-long outages.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, the incident occurred at 12:30.

“We received a call from a member of the public stating that two suspects were seen stealing electrical copper cables on Ellis Park Drive. Members of our Special Operations Team (SOT) were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Our members spotted the two suspects actively cutting and stealing the electrical copper cables. As soon as they noticed our team members, they fled on foot. After a short foot chase, one suspect was swiftly apprehended. An extensive search for the second suspect was conducted but, unfortunately, he managed to evade arrest,” he said.

Powell added that the suspect was handed over to the Greenwood Park SAPS and was charged with theft and tampering with state infrastructure.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, cable theft costs the City R120 million a year.
