Durban North’s recyclers to host clean-up

The clean-up is open to members of the public and community organisations.

GREEN Corridors and TriEcoEmvelo are hosting a major clean-up of the Roadhouse Crescent recycling area under the Connaught Bridge underpass on Wednesday and Thursday (November 29 and 30), with the aim of removing 500 bags of waste.

This area, which has been used as an illegal dumping ground for a long time, has been adopted by Green Corridors in an endeavour to clean it up and support the informal recyclers so they can derive an income from their collections. They also want to formalise the area as a recycling collection point to discourage illegal dumping.

The clean-up is open to members of the public, and community organisations are invited to join in the clean-up from 08:00 until 14:00 on both days: November 29 and 30.

The clean-up will also involve Green Corridors, WESSA and the eThekwini Municipality Cleansing and Solid Waste.

“This clean-up marks our adoption of the area, formalising the collection of waste as a materials recycling facility (MRF), supporting these area recyclers with their efforts to earn an income, and ensuring the site is no longer used as a dump,” said Musa Shange, Green Corridors project officer.

“Through a joint project between eThekwini Municipality, Green Corridors, TriEcoEmvelo and Safripol, we have installed a plastic baler that compresses recyclable plastics. This enables the local recyclers to densify the materials so as to derive benefit from the increased value. We are also erecting a fence around the area to stop the illegal dumping.”
