uMhlanga Promenade run kickstarts festive season

The 5km run and walk saw a number of visitors join in on the day.

THE Umhlanga Summer Festival kickstarted its programme of events across this festive season with a free, non-timed run along the uMhlanga Promenade.

The 5km run and walk was organised between Umhlanga Tourism and local trail-running club, Riverside Trails.

Founder of the group and trail-running stalwart, Buzz Bolton, said the walk/run started and finished at the island next to the iconic Whalebone Pier.

“In the past, we’ve partnered with Umhlanga Tourism for our trail runs which included running through the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve and uMhlanga Beach. They helped make trail running what it is today with previous festivals, and while we weren’t able to run near the lagoon this year, this was a nice way of reviving and utilising one of uMhlanga’s best assets, the picturesque promenade.

“We decided to make the event free to encourage as many participants as possible, and we followed the 5km route of the Saturday Parkrun. Overall, we had close to 70 people take part, and the feedback was positive. We also had some holidaymakers join in which was great to see. I do feel these kinds of events add something to the festival, and our hope is to see more runs in uMhlanga in years to come,” he said.
