Ward 34 councillor Bobby Maharajh said that about 87 people, ranging from children to adults, were displaced with many having to seek shelter with family and friends.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage. Thankfully, there were no injuries or fatalities,” he said.

He said the eThekweni Fire Department was called to the fire and extinguished it.

The fire on Saturday night.

The settlement was affected by a fire in 2022 where an eight-year-old girl died. Her father, who attempted to save her, died in hospital two weeks later from severe burns.

The South African Red Cross Society came forward with donations for the affected people, however, Maharajh said the community is still in need of items to help them start over again.

Non-perishables, blankets, building materials and the like are welcome. Contact Maharajh on 082 374 5128.
