Durban North organisation assists human trafficking survivors with dental care

Very often, poor oral hygiene, made worse by smoking and substance abuse, can mean major dental challenges for human trafficking victims.

HUMAN-TRAFFICKING survivors from the Domino Foundation’s Red Light anti-human-trafficking programme received dental care from Dr Saijal Tularam recently.

For many human-trafficking survivors, a visit to the dentist is not part of their health schedule.

So, it was with some trepidation that the residents of Red Light’s ‘Othandweni’ safe house had set out to their first appointment at the Durban North practice, Redefine Dental.

Their apprehension was very short-lived as they were made to feel very much ‘at home’ by Dr Saijal’s staff. The lady dentist with the welcoming smile then set to do prophylaxis cleaning for three of the patients and a check-up and a filling for the fourth in preparation for having a set of dentures made.

Red Light’s Esther Madikane works closely with the ladies to restore their self-esteem and to see them set to make a new start in life once they leave the programme.

“Our beneficiaries have suffered a lot of abuse, physical and emotional, and their sense of their value is often very low. We are extremely grateful to people like Dr Tularam and her partners who gave our ladies the dental treatment at no cost to our programme,” she said.

Esther added that Apex Dental Laboratories, who work with Redefine Dental, willingly came on board and gave Red Light a discounted price for the dentures.

For anyone interested in offering their professional services to Red Light and its beneficiaries, they can contact Esther on 031 110 0730 or release@domino.org.za.
