Northwood School’s ‘wheelie’ good initiative

The Northwood Cycling Team have decided to honour their school’s 75th anniversary by donating 75 bicycles to communities and individuals in need.

THIS year, Northwood School celebrates its 75th anniversary, and to celebrate the landmark, the school’s cycling team have come up with a ‘wheelie’ good way to pay it forward.

The Northwood Cycling Team have decided to honour the school by donating 75 bicycles to communities and individuals in need.

Educator and master in charge of the cycling programme, Jacques Richter, said the school have already donated 26 bicycles to the Go!Durban Academy in KwaMashu that they’ve partnered with.

“We were looking for an opportunity within our team to give back, and the heart of the project was actually borne out of a conversation with a parent. He said he had a few old bicycles his children had outgrown and wasn’t sure what to do with them. After discussing the matter with the team and coach, Cayde Muldoon, who coincidentally coached at the Go!Durban Academy, as well, we felt it was a great opportunity to bless someone else but also honour the school’s 75th anniversary.

“We’ve even [been able to use] bicycles that aren’t in great condition – we’ve been able to use the spare parts to fix other bicycles. In all, we have 40 bicycles, and 26 have been repaired and donated. If we get to that 75 mark, it would be an amazing achievement, and I’m confident we can with the community’s help. We have even driven around and picked up bicycles from residents who’ve contacted us and were unable to physically bring the bicycle to us. If you have a bicycle gathering dust at home, in any condition, please donate it to this worthy cause,” he said.

Richter added that any bicycle donation was welcome with a focus on smaller bicycles.
