Local security company warns of spike in air-conditioning unit thefts

"Criminals are targeting the units for their copper components," says Marshall Security.

MARSHALL Security say they’ve noticed a spike in theft of air-conditioning units.

The company said criminals are particularly targeting the units for their valuable copper components.

The warning comes after the arrest of a suspect on Wednesday morning (May 15) for theft from a church on Blackburn Road.

“We received an urgent call from a client for assistance on Blackburn Road in the Red Hill area, reporting the theft of an air-conditioning unit from a local church by two suspects. A description of the suspects was circulated to all responding officers,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“Our officers then spotted the two suspects matching the provided description on Chris Hani Road pushing a dismantled aircon unit in a trolley. The suspects attempted to flee, and one of them was arrested while the other suspect managed to evade arrest.”

Greenwood Park SAPS was also contacted.
