PEACEPLAYERS South Africa (PPSA) recently hosted the sixth Annual Girls’ Basketball Festival at Northwood School.
The event brought together 200 high school girls and coaches, as well as four additional high schools teams, who are friends of PeacePlayers, including Northlands Girls’ High School.
The three other schools included Durban Girls’ High School, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and Port Shepstone Girls’ High School.
The festival also featured a number of PeacePlayers Teams, which included participants from its core programmes from Umlazi West, Lamontville, the inner city, Molweni and LIV Village as well as Brettonwood High School and Scottburgh High School.
Nasiphi Khafu, the director of strategy and partnerships from PeacePlayers South Africa, reflected on the festival with pride.
“After 16 games, PeacePlayers Suns were victorious as 2024 Champions with last year’s champions, PMB High, in second place. The PPSA Spirit Award went to Yabongeka Ntanjana from DGHS and the PeacePlayers Way Award went to Kwanele Thusi from Umlazi West. We also congratulate all the girls who dared to show up and had a good time.
“The theme for this year’s festival was to celebrate and empower young girls and women as leaders, both on and off the court, with aspirations for a positive future and to commemorate South African National Women’s Month through basketball. We also hosted a panel discussion with successful women who shared their expertise and life skills as well as health and wellness activities,” she said.
Doug Nedab, the director of basketball at Northwood School and an alumnus of the PeacePlayers South Africa, also praised the festival.
“Ideally, this annual festival is hosted during Women’s Month in a bid to drive empowerment, celebrate women and grow the love for basketball. It is also the first outdoors festival as most of the others have taken place indoors. The festival was fantastic, and the young women were phenomenal. I would love to, one day, see a 3×3 festival as this is something the basketball federation (FIBA) is pushing at an international level,” he said.
