New Year’s Day fire damages uMhlanga restaurant

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

A RESTAURANT in uMhlanga was damaged after a fire broke out on New Year’s morning.

Reagan Gunkel, divisional commander of eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services northern region, said they received a call just after 04:40 about the fire on Chartwell Drive.

“Firefighters from both the uMhlanga and Durban North departments responded to the scene along with a command vehicle from Verulam. On arrival firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was confined to the dining area. Fortunately there were no injuries,” he said.

“Crews had the fire under control within 10 minutes and ventilated the premises. The restaurant suffered smoke and fire damage.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and Durban North SAPS were also in attendance.
