Questions arise over Firwood Road pool closure
The Ward 34 councillor has demanded answers for the continued closure of the pool.
WARD 34 councillor Andrew Akkers has urged the eThekwini Municipality to provide answers as to when the Firwood Road municipal pool will reopen.
The municipal pool, which was closed in July 2017, has now been empty for the last seven years, with the infrastructure around the pool crumbling and falling apart.
In its last comment to the Northglen News, the eThekwini Municipality said the pool was closed as it was “losing water excessively, and upon investigation, an underground water leak was detected”.

At the time, the estimated cost of repairs to the pool was R9 million.
“Firwood Road Municipal Pool has been closed and ‘under repair’ since 2017. Many of our youth (as young as six years old) must walk for up to an hour and nearly four kilometres from Effingham, Avoca and Greenwood Park to enjoy the amenities at Durban North Municipal Pool.
“We need an update on what has been holding up the repairs at Firwood Road for the past seven years. What has happened to the annual budgets for this facility?” Akkers questioned.
