The Northglen News interviewed business owners and a resident last week (Businesses crippled by frequent power outages, Page 3, 24 January) who said the power outage started on Monday at 10:05 and ended the next day at 17:30, causing major inconvenience to businesses and residents in the area.
Some businesses had to close for the duration while others had to stop production. Telecommunications was also an issue even after the fault was repaired.
One business manager, Desiree Naicker, said there was no proper communication throughout the duration of the power failure and even after electricity had been restored, she was still unaware of what the problem was.
Ethekwini Municipality spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said the outage occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, January 14, because of a trip at Virginia Main.
“The initial fault occurred on Monday, January 13 at 10:14, when the main cable between Avoca Major and Island Circle faulted. Switching operations began at 12:54 to isolate the cable, and partial supply was restored, leaving 20 mini substations without power but work to restore power continued,” she said.
Repairs on the cable fault between Avoca and Island Circle commenced throughout the evening on the same day.
“In the early hours of Tuesday, January 14, a trip occurred at Virginia Main. A cable fault between SABC 432 and Kinlock and Margaret Maytom Avenue was identified and isolated at 08:22. Switching began at 07:20, with partial supply restored by 09:01,” she added.
The repairs to the cable fault between Avoca and Island Circle were completed, and full supply was restored at 17:40 on Tuesday, January 14.
She added that residents are urged to report electricity theft or any suspicious activities regarding electricity infrastructure tampering on the electricity contact centre number 0803 11 11 11.
