Man sentenced to three years for copper, water meter thefts

The convicted thief was linked to two cases in Parkhill and Avoca.

MARSHALL Security have welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Simphiwe Gwala who was sentenced to three years in prison this week.

Gwala was convicted for copper and water meter thefts on Duffy Crescent (Avoca) and Conyngham Avenue (Parkhill).

At the time of his arrest he was accused of numerous copper and water meter thefts in the area.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell confirmed that Gwala was arrested on November 6, 2024.

“Following thorough investigations and legal proceedings, Gwala was convicted of crimes committed at Duffy Crescent and Conyngham Avenue. This conviction was diligently handled by Greenwood Park Detective Sergeant Mkhize and prosecutor Ngema, leading to a three-year imprisonment sentence for the convicted suspect. We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for their hard work and dedication in seeing this case through to a successful conclusion,” Powell said.

In recent weeks, there have been several arrests for copper pipe theft in various areas, including Durban North and Greenwood Park.
