A BURST water pipe has led to disaster for a Greenwood Park resident after the entrance to their driveway, as well as their perimeter fence, retaining wall and walkway to the house were severely damaged.

Mark Thompson, who lives on Hedley Road, said it all started following a leak in October last year.

“Initially the leak was reported in October 2024 and the municipality dug up the road to fix the leak. At the time the leak impacted my driveway. Unfortunately they had not finished reinstating the road as every time it would rain heavily the backfill and crusher used would wash away.

“They had just begun work again to reinstate the road last week. On Tuesday evening (March 11) the water pipe burst just after 23:00. I thought it was raining and opened my window to see water gushing out. About an hour later there was a wash away at my pedestrian gate and then my fenceline began to collapse. There is also a sinkhole under my car and in my yard that has developed,” he said.

Ward 34 councillor, Andrew Akkers, who was also on scene, suggested the eThekwini Municipality would need to replace the entirety of the water pipeline on the road to stop any further bursts.
