Alleged gate thieves arrested in Parkhill

Investigations are underway to locate the gate which was allegedly sold to a scrap metal dealer in the south of Durban.

THREE suspects were arrested on Monday afternoon (March 17) in connection with the theft of a metal gate in the Parkhill area.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell, CCTV footage from the theft incident, which occurred last Thursday on Delville Road, helped them identify the suspects’ vehicle.

“Our Special Operations Team (SOT) identified a Nissan NP300 matching the description of a vehicle linked to the gate theft on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road). Our members intercepted the vehicle and questioned the three male occupants, who confessed to stealing the gate and selling it to a metal scrap dealer in Isipingo.

“Greenwood Park Trio Crimes Unit members arrived to assist, and the suspects, along with the vehicle, were transported to the station for further investigation and processing. All three suspects have been detained, and detectives are actively following up to locate and recover the stolen gate,” he said.

Scrap metal theft has plagued various areas across Durban in recent years.

Earlier this year, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure raised serious concerns about the relentless wave of infrastructure destruction, including the theft of aluminum and cables, the vandalism of traffic lights and railway lines, and the destruction of pylons.
