Comets seal table-topping derby win

In all, the Comets have won four games in a row and have won five out of their six games in the tournament so far.

IT was a clinical performance from the the FNB Varsity College Comets on Friday night as they beat FNB UKZN 41-17.

The game was played at the IIE’s Varsity College Durban North and saw the Comets seal the first position on the FNB Varsity Shield log.

In all, the Comets have won four games in a row and have won five out of their six games in the tournament so far.

Five first half tries followed by a further two in the second half gave the Comets another important bonus point with one match to play.

Comets head coach Jeremy McLaren said he was proud of the team.

“UKZN had a lot to play for and they always make it hard for us,” McLaren said.

This was the Comets first home game after three victorious weeks on the road where they travelled to Kimberley, Alice and Cape Town.

For coach McLaren, winning those matches after that travel schedule was a proud moment.

“I am very proud of the boys given the challenges that we have faced over the last few weeks from a travel perspective. Finishing that three-week travel period off with a good win against CPUT in Cape Town was the highlight.”

Should the Comets maintain their position at the top of the log, they will gain automatic promotion to the FNB Varsity Cup next season, just two seasons after joining the Varsity Shield

Sitting top of the log with one match to go means the chances of promotion are increasing.
