Comets earn promotion to Varsity Cup with win

Playing in their final log game at home, the FNB Varsity College Comets beat the FNB WSU All Blacks 41-29.

THE FNB Varsity College Comets made history on Thursday last week when they became the first university team from KwaZulu-Natal to be promoted to the FNB Varsity Cup.

Playing in their final log game at home, they beat the FNB Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks 41-29.

In just their second season of playing in the FNB Varsity Shield, the home team put in a measured performance which saw them run in six tries.

Drico Marx, who scored a try and kicked four conversions and a penalty, was named Man of the Match.

They will now face FNB Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in the semi-finals on Friday, April 4 at the IIE’s Varsity College Durban North.

Head coach Jeremy McLaren expressed his delight with his charges after winning the game.

“I feel blessed and extremely proud of this team and we give honour to God for this achievement. I felt we started a bit nervous against WSU which reflected in the early gameplay. I knew we just needed to focus on ourselves and on our dream. That dream was to get into Varsity Cup competition. As the game drew on I felt we focused on what we had to do with more clarity.

“Winning the game was the first prize for us but we knew in doing so we would achieve our overall goal of promotion. What we’ve gone through as a team over the last two seasons has just shown how much stronger we’ve gotten as a unit. There has never been a lack of commitment from the players, both old and new. We now turn our focus to the semi-finals and we hope to continue our good form,” he said.

Team captain Abande ‘AB’ Mthembu, echoed those sentiments. “There is just an immense feeling of gratitude to the coaching staff, my teammates and our supporters. It could have been anyone but to be together on one journey and one dream getting to one destination, it’s still a surreal feeling. It is special to make history. With the semi-final, much like the rest of the tournament, we’ve been taking it one week at the time. Each game for us is a good strength test for the next season,” he said.
