Progress on multi-million rand Old North Coast Road project welcomed
According to the eThekwini Municipality the upgrade project aims to improve road networks and ease traffic congestion in the area.
AS the project to upgrade, widen and construct a new section of Old North Coast Road continues, the long-term pay-off for residents will bring massive relief, especially in terms of traffic congestion.
That’s according to Sunningdale resident Bronwynne Delaney.
The upgrade project which began in May 2023, valued at R181.9m, is expected to be completed in September this year.

According to the eThekwini Municipality the project aims to improve road networks and ease traffic congestion in the area.
“For the last two years residents in Ward 110 have had to contend with an increase in traffic as motorists trying to access Sunningdale, Glen Anil and areas further north had to be rerouted through Rinaldo Road. This meant an increase in traffic congestion and an increase in heavy duty vehicles like trucks driving through several residential roads, sometimes illegally,” explained Delaney.
“The long-term goal however will be worth it. I recently had a site meeting with some of the contractors and the work done already is incredible. Not only is the road widening, but there is new infrastructure which will ultimately benefit the community and motorists driving in and out of the area. Although the municipality mentioned the project will be completed in September, I anticipate some sections of the road will be open before that,” she said.
Among the upgrades to Old North Coast Road, contractors have constructed new reinforced concrete retaining walls, including new stormwater, culverts, layer works, service relocations, kerbing and median islands.

“Construction teams are prepared to commence with the roadworks but that has been delayed due to weather conditions and electrical cable relocation. The municipality’s electricity department is working to move temporary cables to their permanent positions. Once completed, the area will benefit from modernised infrastructure, reducing future maintenance issues. Despite challenges, the project continues to progress, focusing on timely completion while minimising public inconvenience,” Delaney said.
