New wheels drive Durban NPO’s mission

The vehicles, already in daily use, help the organisation collect more food, more efficiently, from businesses across the city and surrounding areas.

THE NPO SA Harvest recently welcomed the addition of two new trucks to its Durban fleet after they were unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium.

The vehicles, already in daily use, help the organisation collect more food, more efficiently, from businesses across the city and surrounding areas.

Since 2019, the NPO’s food rescue operations have been fighting food waste and distributing it to a network of vetted community organisations across the province.

These include soup kitchens, children’s homes, and education-linked feeding programmes that provide daily support to vulnerable children, families, and the elderly.

“In the past 12 months, SA Harvest has rescued enough nutritious food in KwaZulu-Natal to provide over 4.9 million meals. To visualise that impact, that’s enough to fill Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium more than six times,” explained uMhlanga resident Chiara Henry.

Henry, who is SA Harvest’s procurement manager, said the new vehicles are already making a difference.

“They’ve boosted our cold chain capacity, which means we can now onboard more donor partners. As proud partners to The Sharks, SA Harvest is a bold force in the fight against food waste and hunger in Durban.

“In KZN, we currently support 67 community-based organisations. If you see our trucks on the road, give us a hoot! We’re either out collecting food or delivering it, usually within 24 hours, where it will be turned into a warm, nourishing meal.”
