VIDEO: Bowl for charitable cause at Parkhill Bowling Club

The bowls day is in support of three charities.

UPDATE – Due to a low turnout, the organisers have had to postpone this event. They will announce a new date soon.

TWO educators are encouraging the community to come out onto the greens for a fun Bowls Day all in the name of charity.

Gavin Skevington, the director of sport at Northlands Primary School, and Angela Walter, departmental head at Virginia Preparatory School, said the fundraiser set for July 5 will help three charities, Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), Sithanda Upliftment Projects, and the SAFE fostering network.

The duo previously hosted several successful Bowls Day charity events and are again encouraging participants to bring out their best outfits for the event.

“When Gav messaged me about rekindling the event which we last held in 2019 I was only too keen to do another Bowls Day,” Walter said. “What is awesome this time is we are supporting three different charities. As educators two of those charities work closely with children and that’s a cause close to our hearts. I’ve been spreading the word through my circles and motivating people to get in touch. We’d love to see some of the other schools get involved. There are a whole bunch of prizes up for grabs on the day and a raffle.”

Skevington’s outreach work has seen him wear different cow-patterned costumes at Midmar Miles, fun runs, triathlons and even a hike up Sani Pass.

“In the past we’ve raised more than R10 000 and we hope to do the same this year. My involvement in charity work started several years ago on a walk through a park. I saw several homeless people in need and I reached out to my circle of friends to find how I could help. It was through that that I met Gords Reid and he introduced me to CHOC. That is what spurred me on to help others in need in whatever way I can. This bowls day is one way we feel we can make a tangible difference,” he said.
