City unveils new features in Moses Mabhida Stadium remedial works

The City added several new features will be added to improve the stadium.

THE eThekwini Municipality said the remedial and refurbishment project at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium is progressing well.

The project, which commenced last year, includes the emergency rehabilitation of the concrete and roof structure, focusing on major identified structural defects.

This includes the rehabilitation of steel, concrete, and roof structures, addressing issues such as compromised mechanical joints, steel corrosion treatment, and the arch structure.

“As part of the initial phase of the project, significant maintenance issues were addressed. These actions included the replacement of the damaged roof membrane, applying steel corrosion coatings to exposed areas, replacing the arch cladding, removing corroded sky car infrastructure, and improving drainage systems for easier maintenance,” the City said in a statement.

Last week, during the Community Services Committee meeting, a request was made for an extension of the emergency remedial work contract at the stadium.

This, however, is subject to approval by Council.

“The extension aims to ensure the continued progress of critical repairs necessary to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the facility. The committee acknowledged the importance of completing the remaining work within the revised timeline and emphasised the need for close monitoring to ensure that the project meets both quality and compliance standards.”

This includes a new viewing platform with 60% increase in floor area, featuring a cantilevered glass floor for an ‘air walk’ experience, a new Sky Car with increased travel time which will be accessible to people with disabilities.

Other plans include a new Zip Line which ends at the People’s Park and a new Big Swing.
