Old North Coast Road upgrade to bring relief
Launched in May 2023, the road upgrade is part of a broader initiative by the eThekwini Municipality to improve traffic flow and infrastructure.
ETHEKWINI Ward 110 PR Councillor Rowena Bosman recently conducted a site inspection of the ongoing Old North Coast Road upgrade project which is aimed at addressing longstanding traffic challenges in the Sunningdale and Glen Anil areas.
For the past two years, residents and businesses in the vicinity have endured severe traffic congestion and limited access due to the closure of this critical route.
Launched in May 2023, the road upgrade is part of a broader initiative by the eThekwini Municipality to improve traffic flow and infrastructure.
The project is valued at R181.9m and is being implemented in phases.

Following her site visit, Bosman reported that work is progressing steadily.
“After engaging with the main contractor, I’m pleased to report significant progress,” said Bosman. “If all goes according to plan and no further complications arise, one section of Old North Coast Road could be partially reopened within the next six to eight weeks.”
She highlighted that easing congestion — especially along Rinaldo Road and its connecting routes — remains a top priority. Bosman noted that major aspects of the project include upgrading sidewalks, relocating electrical infrastructure, and installing new traffic signals.
“Since my last visit, visible progress has been made. The contractor is advancing further along the road as each section is completed. Currently, the project is 77% complete. While some work remains — particularly on roadworks, retaining walls, and concrete structures — a substantial portion of the job has already been accomplished. Residents can expect phased relief as more sections of the road open up, contributing to improved accessibility and traffic flow in the northern suburbs,” she said.
