Suspect arrested for copper theft in Umgeni Park
Since the start of this year, copper pipe thefts have been reported on Umgeni Road and Marine Drive Avenue.
A SUSPECT was arrested on Sunday morning after allegedly stealing copper pipes from a home in Umgeni Park.
The incident occurred at about 06:50 on January 11.
The suspect was disturbed by a resident on Marine View Avenue.
“The suspect had fled their property after stealing copper piping and being disturbed. The resident advised that the suspect was using crutches, making the incident all the more unusual. Our officers established that the suspect had jumped over the front wall, gained entry to the property, and then cut and stole approximately 1m of copper piping,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

The suspect was detained while hiding in the shower room of a domestic quarters at a nearby residence, still in possession of the copper piping.
“SAPS arrived shortly thereafter and transported the suspect to Greenwood Park police station,” he said.
There have been a number of copper pipe and copper cable thefts following arrests in recent weeks.
The last arrest was made on Old Mill Way last week where a suspect was caught tampering with copper pipes.
The suspect was later caught wheeling a bin he had stolen from another property in the area.
