Uncertainty looms over Firwood Road pool

The pool has been empty for almost nine years, with the infrastructure around the pool crumbling and falling apart.

THE eThekwini Municipality said any plans to repair Firwood Road Swimming Pool will be addressed through a Capital Services Allocation (CSA) capital project.

However no word has been given on when the repairs and rehabilitation of the pool would take place, plunging the space into an uncertain future.

The pool, which was closed in July 2017, has been empty for almost nine years, with the infrastructure around the pool crumbling and falling apart.

It is one of nine Olympic-sized pools (50m) in the municipality and had been a source of pride for residents in Ward 34.

When the pool was closed the City said the facility was losing approximately 30 000 litres of water per day.

Last week Andrew Akkers, the ward councillor for the area, said the closure has caused anger and frustration among residents.

Marketing and communications director for the City, Mandla Nsele, who responded to questions posed by Northglen News, could not address timelines on the pool reinstatement and repair but instead provided background into what forced the closure of the pool.

“Investigations were conducted, including the excavation of the pool launders and the exposure of piping around the perimeter of the pool, to identify the source of the leak and determine the scope of work required. Due to the extent of the damage identified and the estimated costs associated with the necessary repairs, it was agreed that the required rehabilitation work would be addressed through Capital Services Allocation (CSA) capital project,” he said.
