Calls for speedy repair of Park Hill sinkhole
The sinkhole at the intersection of Douglas Road and Blackburn Road is cause for safety concerns, says a local resident.
A PARK HILL resident has slammed what he calls the eThekwini Municipality’s ‘prolonged inaction’ over repairing a sinkhole at the intersection Douglas Road and Blackburn Road.
At the time, the sinkhole was forming near a stormwater drain and the area around it was dug up, however the subsequent repair was not carried out.
This was in October last year, explained Angus Parsons who is at his wits’ end.

“When the hole was dug up the City put in two concrete blocks over the hole. However, over the course of several months vehicles accessing Douglas Road struck one of the concrete blocks, pushing it further and further outwards, endangering motorists. One of the concrete blocks has edged out onto Blackburn Road. At the same time, vehicles are entering Douglas Road via the exit lane, creating a clear and immediate traffic hazard.
“I’ve found car parts next to the barriers and I’ve repeatedly reported the matter to the municipality. It has taken months of back and forth and last week I was told the project to repair and reinstate that section of road will go out to tender. It was put out last year allegedly but they were put on hold. I was given the indication that by the end of February the sinkhole will be fixed, but I don’t believe it,” he said.
When Northglen News visited the site they found a road sign over the stormwater drain with the concrete barriers misaligned and not covering the hole as it should have been.
A day later, the City placed the two concrete barriers over the hole to ensure there is no danger to pedestrians or motorists for the time being.
However, the issue has not been resolved.
