VIDEO: Cornubia robbery suspects arrested in high speed chase

Several cellphones were found in the suspects’ possession and the vehicle was also fitted with fake number plates.

A HIGH-SPEED chase and crash of three suspects has been captured on dash-cam footage following a cellphone robbery on Friday evening (February 20).

It is alleged that three suspects had robbed a member of the public of their cellphone at a retail centre in the Cornubia area at about 18:35.

The suspects were spotted fleeing the scene in a white VW Polo.

After patrolling the area in search of the vehicle, members from Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team spotted the vehicle two hours later.

“Our members spotted the vehicle travelling towards Durban Central from Durban North. An interception was attempted; however, the vehicle sped off at high speed, initiating a pursuit,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“During the chase, the suspects drove recklessly, skipping multiple red traffic lights and narrowly avoiding collisions with other road users. The vehicle proceeded onto Argyle Road toward the M4 intersection, where it collided with another vehicle and came to a stop on the opposite side of the intersection,” he said.

Law enforcement also recovered multiple cellphones, including the stolen Samsung taken during the earlier robbery.

“Further inspection revealed that the registration plates were false. The original plates were found concealed beneath the fraudulent plates. It has since been established that the robbery suspects arrested during this operation are linked to multiple common robbery cases across the greater Durban area, including a robbery and murder case that is currently under investigation,” Powell said.
