THE chairperson of the Kenville and Sea Cow Lake Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association, Anil Beekrum, has called for stricter enforcement and load limit and heigh restriction signs to warn truck drivers from accessing residential roads in the area.

This comes after a series of incidents, one of which occurred over the December holidays where a truck got stuck under the low-lying railway bridge near the Umgeni Iron Works.

Then last month, a truck driver got stuck at the end of a dead-end road on Wembley Road, leading to the truck and trailer having to be towed out.

According to Beekrum, trucks exceeding the weight limit also caused damage to infrastructure in the past, leading to stormwater drains and pavements being damaged.

“We are pleading with the municipality to put in signs to warn truck drivers about accessing these roads. Many of the roads in Kenville and Sea Cow Lake are quite narrow, making it difficult to navigate in a heavy-duty vehicle. Of course we aren’t saying trucks shouldn’t operate at all, but they also have to use roads that are designated for them. I also feel for drivers who may be led through an area incorrectly by their GPS,” he explained.

“There is only one five-ton limit sign at the bottom of Rosary Road but it’s not enough. As the ratepayers’ body we are asking for these to be installed on various roads in the area. There are also instances of truck drivers exceeding that limit, disregarding the limits, so another thing we’d call for is law enforcement to act and fine drivers breaking the rules,” he said.
