Sunningdale resident laces up for Comrades debut
Desiree Viviers is hoping to draw on her positive attitude as she attempts her first Comrades Marathon this weekend.
WHEN you meet Desiree Viviers for the first time, you can’t help but smile because of her infectious, positive energy.
The Sunningdale resident and mother of three hopes to draw on the optimism of her positive attitude as she attempts her first Comrades Marathon this weekend.
A member of the DHS Old Boys Athletics Club (Oldies), Desiree said she was inspired by her dad who ran the Comrades Marathon twice unofficially.

“I’ve wanted to run the Comrades Marathon for a while now because my dad has done it. Then I had my children and I only got back on the road again after my father (Louis Wilkinson) was diagnosed with cancer. I had to get my mind off things and running became my purpose. I also want to make him proud,” she said.
Earlier this year Desiree completed her first 56km marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon, and was supported by her father and children.
“They are going to be my number one supporters. I think anyone who trains for the Comrades talks about sacrifice. It’s the early morning runs, at times having to not attend social events because you’re training. It does put a strain on your family,” she said.

This year, for the first time the ultra-marathon will have three start times and Desiree is in the first batch.
“Initially I said I was happy with 11:59:59 but my coach and fellow club members said be realistic. If I have a good day I would like to complete it in nine hours. I’m definitely going to pace myself but also try not to chase one specific time. It was just my luck that I chose my first Comrades as the Up Run. I have done two route testers and the hills have been real killers but I keep reminding myself of why I’m doing this and running my own race,” she said.
