Stellar year for Virginia Prep surf star
Adriana Canning, a water sports star, has excelled at several surfing competitions this year, including the Rookie Rippers competition.
VIRGINIA Preparatory School Grade Six learner Adriana Canning has had a stellar year out on the water.
In February she placed first in the U12 category at the O’Neill Cold Water Junior Classic in Cape Town.
In March she placed first in the U12 category at the Quiksilver King of the Groms in Durban; she also secured third place in the U14 girls division.
In April she placed first in the U12 category at the Rip Curl Grom Search in Port Alfred and made the final of the girls U14 section.
Most recently the talented surfer placed first in the U12 category at the O’Neill SMTH Shapes Rookie Rippers, the curtain-raiser to the annual Ballito Pro Festival.
“This has been a competition I’ve competed since I was eight. I did win it when I was younger but the last few years I’ve come second and third. I was quite excited with the result and I’m very pleased. The waves were quite big which made the competition a bit tougher. I’m looking forward to next year’s competition where I will be moving up an age group,” she said.
At school she is also involved in swimming and water polo and outside of school she is involved in acrobatics.
