Beware fake AARTO SMS scams, warns Metro Police
The SMS contains a fraudulent link which falsely claims motorists owe money and offers a 50% discount if payment is made.
THE Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) has warned residents about a fraudulent SMS doing the rounds.
The SMS contains a link to a fake website purporting to be the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTO) portal.

Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for Metro Police, said the message instructs recipients to enter their vehicle registration number, after which it falsely claims that they have an outstanding infringement penalty.
“Motorists are strongly urged not to open or click on the link, as it is a scam. The fraudulent website falsely states that the recipient owes money and offers a 50% discount if payment is made.”
“If you receive an SMS and are unsure whether it is legitimate, they should verify their AARTO status before taking any action. They may contact the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) National Call Centre on 0861 227 861, contact the Durban Metro Police Service AARTO Help Desk on 031 311 2861/2/3, or visit the official AARTO website,” Zungu said.
