Metro Police warns emergency lane transgressors
Metro Police warn motorists they could face fines of up to R1500 if they break the law by driving in the emergency lane.
THE Durban Metro Police Service (DPMS) has warned motorists who break the law by driving in the emergency (yellow) lane that they will be fined.
Last week Metro Police held an operation on the M4 Ruth First Highway (northbound) focusing on motorists unlawfully driving in the yellow lane to bypass traffic.
Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said this type of dangerous behaviour not only violates traffic laws but also poses a serious risk to other road users and contributes to congestion.

“We implemented this operation because it’s contributing to a number of accidents and also causing danger to other road users,” he said. “We also have pedestrians walking who are at risk of being struck by motorists using the yellow lane to overtake.”
Zungu said motorists parking in a yellow lane face a R500 fine while driving in the yellow lane and overtaking traffic is R1 500.
“We have a number of excuses from motorists who have been caught, with the most common excuse being raised is they are rushing.”
He added that the transgressors involved in breaking the law were not just taxis. “We are enforcing the law across the board. We are not selective when it comes to implementing the law,” he said.
