ONE person was arrested while two others are still at large after an alleged scam attempt in Ballito on the KZN North Coast on Saturday (August 29).

Durban North SAPS Trio Crimes Unit and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT) were conducting patrols for the suspects’ vehicle and stopped them after a short chase in uMhlanga.

“The suspects had initially tried to flee but the vehicle eventually became stuck in traffic, at which point the suspects abandoned their attempt to flee,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

The vehicle stopped on Medigate Road where two suspects managed to evade apprehension, while one suspect was successfully apprehended by the members.

“A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of numerous speedpoint machines and keypads believed to have been used in the commission of fraudulent activities.”

The suspect was charged for possession of Section 36 which is the possession of suspected stolen property.

In a separate incident also on Saturday, Tracker SA and KZN VIP Security recovered a vehicle stolen from an uMhlanga mall.

“It is believed that a white Volkswagen Polo was parked at the mall when suspects managed to gain entry to the vehicle and fled the area, travelling in the direction of the N2,” said Gareth Naidoo of KZN VIP Security. “The vehicle was eventually located in the Ntuzuma area, where the suspects managed to make a narrow escape before members could apprehend them.”

Naidoo added the suspects had damaged the dashboard of the vehicle in an effort to locate and remove the vehicle’s tracking equipment.
