FOUR members of the North Durban Probus Club shared personal stories, achievements and memorable experiences at the club’s August meeting as part of its “Members’ Moments & Milestones” theme.

Probus is a social club for retired professional and business people. The North Durban branch holds its monthly meetings on the second Monday of each month at the Rolling Hills Clubhouse.

Joy Shaw, 81, a member of Durban’s Granny Gromments, told members how more than 70 grannies enjoy riding boogie boards on Friday mornings at the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club on the Durban beachfront.

June Hansen, a retired principal of a special-needs school for children with disabilities, reflected on milestones from her career during South Africa’s transformative years.

Melody Verbaan shared stories of car trouble she encountered while travelling as a tour guide, while Corrina Pieterse-Downes spoke about her career as a veterinarian and how her professional journey ultimately ended without a pet of her own.

Pieterse-Downes also recalled cherished memories of her time at uShaka Marine World, including her experiences with Durban’s famous dolphin, Gambit, and his offspring.

North Durban Probus president Heléne Griffiths said the monthly sessions allowed members to learn more about one another beyond their professional and social lives.

“Our Members’ Moments & Milestones sessions give our members the opportunity to share the experiences that have shaped their lives and created memories they still treasure,” Griffiths said.

“We welcome retired professionals and business people who are looking for friendship, fellowship and an opportunity to connect with others who have shared experiences,” she said.
