KZN police have revealed more details about an operation on Friday morning (September 25) which led to the death of a suspect wanted for the murder of two crime intelligence officers.

The officers, Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo and Captain Louis Nel, were travelling in an unmarked state vehicle when unknown gunmen opened fire on them on Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe in April.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspect was killed in a shoot-out in Emaplasini in Inanda.

He also revealed that five other men, said to be his accomplices, were also arrested during a multidisciplinary intelligence operation in Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Mandeni and Newlands West.

“The sixth suspect refused to obey police instructions and was shooting from inside the house for about three hours. Negotiations went on until he released his girlfriend who was inside the house.

“The suspect was eventually shot and fatally wounded during the operation and a Special Task Force officer was shot on the hand but is in good spirits after receiving first aid medical attention,” Netshiunda said.

The five suspects are set to appear in court next week.
