World News Day: NPO shares why local journalism matters
The NPO has credited Northglen News with helping make a difference to the lives of the people at the Malacca Road Informal Settlement.
MEDIA organisations around the world, including Northglen News (Caxton Local Media Durban), will mark World News Day on Monday, September 28.
The global news campaign draws attention to the role that journalists play in providing trustworthy news and information while also showing how journalism makes a difference.
One person who can attest to this is Durban North resident Arianne Hayes-Hill.
Hayes-Hill, who runs the non-profit organisation (NPO) The Seed Fund, works with the Malacca Road Informal Settlement community.
“When I started the NPO in 2017 it was to make a difference to the community, but also specifically in the lives of children. Northglen News has been incredible since the day we started. Not just in terms of featuring articles on the work we do but they’ve put us in touch with volunteers and sponsors.
“It has been so positive because we’ve made connections with so many others including helping the Khabazela soup kitchen in Avoca Hills. It’s great to have a local news organisation that takes an interest in the work we do and helps grow our impact on the larger community at the settlement,” she said.
