Durban North pool car park to be upgraded in R1m project

Funding has been secured for the construction of a footpath leading to Umhlanga Rocks Drive as well as repairing the current parking lot.

WARD 36 councillor Heinz de Boer has welcomed a project, worth approximately R1m, to upgrade the parking lot next to the Durban North pool.

The funding has been secured through the Community Infrastructure Projects (CIP), which funds repairs and construction based on councillor submissions.

The project includes the construction of a footpath leading to Umhlanga Rocks Drive and higher kerbs to prevent vehicles from parking in Whynotte Park.

“This has been raised previously by the community and visitors to the pool. For several years the parking lot has been uneven, damaged and an eyesore. I have done a few oversight visits to the pool and one of the main issues has been the car park,” he said.

In recent years, various roleplayers, including local businesses and the Durban North conservancy, have been involved in a project to uplift Whynotte Park, in particular tackling littering.

De Boer added he has already met with engineers on sight to discuss the project.

“The project should start in the next two to three weeks. There is likely to be some excavation before the contractor levels out the area and puts down crusher,” he said.
