A school legacy continues 70 years

Living by its core values of Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility and Loyalty, Northlands Primary School celebrates its 70th Jubilee this year and we can really look back with pride on seven decades of growth and achievement.

From humble beginnings in October 1949, housed in a re-purposed army barracks, when we were known as the Kensington Drive Junior Government School. With 96 pupils, a staff of three, Miss Dale, Miss Gardiner and Miss Ridgeway and under the guidance of headmistress Miss E A Milne. By 1950 numbers had grown to 155 and two more teachers were added, by 1951 it was evident that a permanent school was sustainable and in December 1956 the new primary school building was opened. We continued to grow. Adding playing fields, a school hall and even a school swimming pool. In 1985 Mr Duncan Rankin was appointed to Northlands Primary and he would be the last principal at the school on Mackeurtan Avenue.

It was decided that Northlands Boys High and Beachwood Boys High would amalgamate to form Northwood High School. This meant that the primary school would vacate its premises located on the lower campus of Northwood High School and move to the Beachwood Building. The move was completed in December 1989 and Northlands as we know it now was born.

In 1991 we accepted our first children of colour and in the same year North Crest Primary school was absorbed in its entirety into Northlands, as North Crest ran from a pre-primary level we were able to offer a “one-stop” educational facility. This facility grew again when Fairway Pre-Primary joined us in 2005. From what were really inauspicious beginnings we have grown to what we see now, a beautiful treed campus with world class facilities and over 1000 pupils. We have settled into our roots, much like the mighty Oak tree that makes up our school badge.

With the arrival of a new Principal in 2018, Mr Alistair Naidu and with two new Deputy Heads on board, Mr Anthony Hoyer and Mr Clive Beetge. Along with the support of the Governing Body, as well as a dynamic management team, change has rapidly taken shape on our beautiful campus over the past 24 months. We have added much to our state of the art facilities.

A brand new multi-purpose cricket and hockey astro. Further upgrades to the tuck shop area. A new iMac Centre to replace the existing Senior Primary computer room. A newly refurbished Junior Primary Computer Centre. New sound and lighting in our hall to allow for big scale school productions. The most auspicious and exciting changes are the long overdue renovations in our Pre-Primary section. Now re-branded as “Northlands Pre-Primary School”, further cementing our educational offering from Grade 000 to Grade 7.
