‘I do not give money – I give a future’

An enouragement to help the homeless with shelter rather than money.

Editor

I HAVE recently noticed that there are beggars at the corner of Swapo and Adelaide Tambo on a regular basis. Here in Durban North we have been spared the constant harassment that is such a common occurrence in other areas, for example up Sandile Thusi Road to mention one.

I hope that the people living in this area will resist the temptation to hand out money to these beggars. I am all for helping people, however it is an accepted fact that doing so simply adds to the problem. If people do feel the need to give money rather give the money to a homeless shelter or charity who can use it to make a real difference.

This morning I happened to park next to a vehicle which had a lovely sticker on a driver’s side window which would immediately be seen by a beggar, which simply stated: I do not give money – I give a future.
