YOUR article in the Northglen News dated 29 January, entitled, What is the cause? pertaining to the spike in the abandonment of animals refers. While I accept that people are having to downsize or leave their homes for various reasons and then have to deal with finding homes for their pets, I do also think many people use this as an opportunity to just get rid of their pets, with no conscience as to what will become of them or who they will end up with.
They should assist these organisations as much as possible to choose another family. After all, this is like giving away a family member!
I, like many others I know, spend much time knocking on doors, ringing bells and trying to catch frightened dogs about to get knocked over in the road. When and if you are lucky enough to find their home, the owners are quite disinterested, and if you drive past their home a few days later, the poor neglected ‘furkid’ will be outside again.
This Christmas and New Year was one of the worst times ever. Many pets were left with irresponsible carers and the problems were exhausting and heartbreaking for many.
Thank you Ashburne Vet, Ridge Vet, Marshall Security and many others who help so much to make a way for these animals when often there just isn’t. Please let’s help and do our bit by micro-chipping, spaying and neutering our pets and making sure our properties and gates are closed properly so our pets can’t get out.
Let us also report animal cruelty, even if it is by your friendly neighbour.
