Dr Waja’s true grit

WESTDENE- Dentist Shouket Waja named Hero of the Month by LeadSA

Dr Shouket Waja of the Westdene Dental Mews was named the LeadSA Hero of the month for September 2013 for establishing the Waja Ka Meno Trust and its aim of providing free dental treatment to mentally disabled children in Johannesburg.

“I am ordinary general practitioner dentist who graduated from Wits,” said Dr Waja, “but I always had a desire to do more than just the conventional dentistry hence the motivation to make myself available to disadvantaged children.”

For eighteen years Dr Waja has been presenting dental education and care to school children across Johannesburg. The children now look forward to their ‘dental day’ where they receive toothbrushes, toothpaste and other treats.

“To them it means the world, even just being able to have their own toothbrush. It has evolved now to an entire day where the schools have performances and fun educational activities surrounding dental care.”

“This year is different because now with the Waja Ka Meno Trust- which means ‘Eat with Teeth’- these children can have operations in theatre free of cost.”

In order to facilitate this free treatment for mentally disabled children, Dr Waja has partnered with dentists, specialists, dental supply companies and laboratories and other businesses. LeadSA recognised Dr Waja for his outstanding efforts and he is grateful for what the recognition will do for the trust.

“It felt fantastic being given such and honour from LeadSA because it does benefit our trust and lets more people know about us. Our hope is to be able to help various children across Johannesburg.”
