It’s a hard day on the job for pupils

FAIRLANDS – Special needs children from Footprints School given special jobs by Pick ‘n Pay.

Two senior pupils from Footprints Special Needs School in Malanshof have been reporting for work at 6am sharp every Wednesday morning for the last few weeks.

Lency Tsetsewa and Clayton Nell have been learning all about the ins and outs of retailing at Pick n Pay in Fairlands, thanks to manager Michael Simmons.

Simmons willingly opened his store’s bakery to allow these special needs pupils the opportunity to experience the ‘real’ work day and operation of a bakery and kitchen. He also treated them as part of his work team, down to including them in staff meetings.

“Our pupils have two more weeks of work left until the end of term,” said principal Sharon Rowe. “They have found that working from 6am till 1pm is a challenge in itself.”

The pupils, according to Rowe, have complained of sore feet and the slog of rising early to report for work. “At this stage, I think they have second thoughts about growing up and entering the work force,” she adds humorously.

Footprints School would like to extend their gratitude to Simmons and his team for granting their pupils this great opportunity to learn new life skills.
