Diving for treasure

EMMARENTIA - Polar diving isn't just for Scandinavians. Emmarentia's Normalair Underwater Club are going to brave the icy cold waters of the dam in search of treasure this Saturday.

The winter solstice is on Saturday 21 June and an ideal day for Joburgers to snuggle under the covers, or nurse a mug of hot soup. It’s also the perfect opportunity to have a dive into the now icy waters of Emmarentia Dam.

Well, that’s what the Normalair Underwater Club is doing. Winter solstice is this club’s annual midwinter polar dive day.

“The aim of the day is for our divers to dive objects out of the dam on 21 June. But we don’t haul out just any normal dam debris – we only fish out the weirdest things we can find,” Pierre Viljoen from the club explained.

“It’s a lot of fun.”

The day isn’t only for divers – potjiekos masters will be competing in a potjie-competition, and there are great prizes to be won and Glühwein to consume.

The event starts at noon on 21 June at the Normal Air Underwater Yacht Club, off Louw Geldenhuys Drive at Emmarentia Dam. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring a blanket and watch the weird and wonderful things being dragged out of the water and into the light.
