Safety at Helen Joseph questioned

WESTDENE - Helen Joseph has become the subject of much speculation regarding its safety.

Helen Joseph Hospital is reeling on the verge of criticism by residents.

The hospital has become the subject of much speculation regarding its safety.

There were 161 recorded security incidents at the Helen Joseph Hospital since January last year.

This is revealed in a written reply by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to the DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom’s questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

Thefts have become a major problem – with 73 thefts and 16 burglaries/break-ins recorded.

There were 14 incidents of property damage and nine incidents of unruly behaviour.

A total of 42 criminal charges have been laid and seven arrests made from January 2013 to end August this year.

Recently a Helen Joseph nurse was violently raped while on duty on 29 August.

However, Helen Joseph puts measures into place by increasing the number of security guards to 48 during the day and 38 during the night – up from 33 day guards and 23 night guards previously. “The Gauteng Health Department must speed up its security review and take a firm decision that ensures good security at a reasonable price,” said Bloom in a statement.
