GALLERY: We are family

NEWLANDS — Family values instilled with family fun day.

Family members from and around the Newlands area, got together on 23 May for SAVF’s Family Day.

The event was held at the organisation’s premises in Newslands, in correlation with International Day of Families on 15 May.

The organisation’s Irma Visagie said that they want families in the community to be strong units.

“We want to add values to families and help them stand together against so many socio-economic issues in the community. We want to enforce family time… and we want them to be a part of the social service.”

Fun may have been the order of the day but all activities were designed to go hand-in-hand with the theme of adding values; this meant that each family member had to take part in various activities from station to station.

At each station, families had to create something new among themselves that represented the unit. At the first station, families created dragons from recycled materials and got a little dirty painting and decorating them. The second station was equally as creative, with each member contributing values that represented their family to the hand-made family shield.

Lauren Krope, Thandeka Nkosi and Cresilda Cornelius – three Sophiatown SAPS volunteers – gave a vivid and shocking presentation on drug awareness, abuse and the effects substance abuse can have on people.

At the end of the day, children were given tokens and gifts sponsored by WesBank and Makro.
