A trench dug out for a cable installation has been left open for the last six months on the corner of Main Road and 2nd Avenue, Melville.
The original development was to install new power cables in the area, but the project was stalled indefinitely due to complications with building and development contractors employed by City Power, said Ward 69 councillor Katja Naumann.
She had the following to say about the decision regarding the dug up trench, “After six months of complaining, City Power has finally owned up to the fact that no chief learning officer was appointed, and thus the contractors also failed to employ the necessary local labour.”
Naumann went on to explain that this matter will be investigated further by City Power. “I am particularly interested in how the previous contractor managed to be paid despite clearly breaking the conditions of his contract. Residents and shop owners have had to skirt around the open trenches on the pavement in 2nd Avenue and many residents have still not had their driveways restored to their former state. I hope that this dangerous situation will be addressed as soon as possible,” she concluded.
Questions were sent to City Power Project co-coordinator Theo Lutshaba on 3 July and City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele on 6 July. Comment is still awaited.
